American Forces Vietnam Network Photos

These are some of the thousands of pictures I shot in Viet Nam between 1968 and 1970. The originals are Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides digitized on a Nikon Coolscan  LS-5000 film scanner.  The original scans are at the maximum resolution of the scanner. 5300 x 3600 pixels (concentrated into the area of a 35mm frame) in lossless TIF format. This results in an average 32 megabyte file per image.

The images in these galleries have been downsized to 1600 x 1080 pixel minimally-compressed JPG images with an average file size of 1 megabyte, for web display.  This image size will just fit onto a standard  1920 x 1080 full-HD TV or monitor.screen, if you set the web browser to full-screen mode; i.e. no tool bars, address slots, etc.

This collection is focused on the AFVN radio-TV facilites. I have thousands more pictures of Viet Nam not related to AFVN that are not represented in this set of pages. 

• General Slide Show -  Shows typical life in Viet Nam before the massive American build-up startup in the mid-1960s. Then shows some AFVN and MARS (Military Affiliate Radio System) installations.  I originally produced this "Combo" show for presentation to amateur radio clubs under the topic "Radio in Viet Nam", and have shown it dozens of times over the last two decades.

• AFVN Nha Trang - AM Station at Dong Ba Thin, about half-way between Nha Trang and Cam Ranh Bay.
   
• AFVN Nha Trang - FM & TV Station on Hon Tre; an island about 5 miles off the coast of Nha Trang
   
• AFVN Pleiku - AM-FM-TV Station in the central highlands of Viet Nam. Few pics because I was only there a few hours.
   
• AFVN Saigon - Network headquarters AM-FM-TV
   
• THVN Saigon - The Vietnamese counterpart station next door to AFVN
