APRS Showing ACARS

(AIRCRAFT COMMUNICATIONS AND REPORTING SYSTEM)

DATE: 1996 time frame!... This screen showed the LIVE positions of commercial aircraft being monitored on the national ACARS frequency of 131.55 MHz. We were using a VHF scanner and a DSP-12 packet TNC for the ACARS decoding and then converting those packets to APRS format for display here. At the altitude of most aircraft, notice that we could hear out 200 miles in all directions.

We did nothing more with this project. The DSP-12 TNC was very expensive $800 and is no longer available. Since very few people used this TNC, we abandoned this approach.
