Tan Son Nut was the civil airport for the city of Sai Gon on one side of the runways. It was a huge military airbase used by both US and South Vietnamese forces on the other side of of the runways.
Part of the military complex was the headquarters complex of the U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) a.k.a. "The Pentagon East" during the US involvement there.
