Long Binh - USARV (US Army Vietnam) Hqs |
Long Binh was the headquarters of the US Army in Viet Nam ("USARV"), and the headquarters of the Army's 1st Logistics Command. The base was enormous, with over a tenth of all American troops (50,000+ of a total of 549,000 in Viet Nam) living on it at the peak of the war in 1968-70. At that time, it was reportedly the single largest military base in the world!
The last three shots are of the famous (or infamous) "90th Replacement Battalion". Virtually all U.S. Army personnel processed through this unit arriving or departing Viet Nam duty. I.e. over 300,000 every year! During this "not-officially-declared-as-a war" conflict, you were only obligated to spend 1 year duty in Viet Nam. This was commonly known among G.Is as "Tour 365". The result of this was nearly 100% turnover in every military unit every year!
